50 years with motorcycles.

Motorcycles. Nice partners for us for half century.
Wonderful sounds, vibrations, and the smell of exhaust.
Attractive, not only the large ones but the small ones as well.
I go panting under the hot air down paved roads in scorching summers.
I warm my hands with a touch of a muffler in chilling winter.
How can I express this fascination with Motorcycles?

     Harley Davidson Street Bob 1800

It's already spring in Jeju in March. Our Harley Davidson Street Bob goes along the well-maintained high-quality roads. Everyone is warm to Japanese old riders worn matching clothing. We are greeted by people in Korean, with a big smile and loud voice in various places. Google Maps doesn’t work properly due to national security reasons. Motorcycles are not allowed to go on highways in Korea. We are flustered by the navigation application we've never used before, and nervous about convenience stores that don't have toilets.
This is Korea. Electric cars dominate Busan, Daegu, and Seoul, and KIA and LG sign boards are everywhere, both inside and outside of the buildings. I am the only one taking pictures with a Sony Handy-Cam ,an old and rather big video recorder. We are proud of ourselves made in Japan in 1958, also old ones.

Suburb of Kuala Lumpur, a huge volume of dense clouds approached violently and low. The numerous motorcycles flew by us began to flurried all at once, and they took refuge into the rain shelters which were set up every 2km along the expressway for motorcycles. What will happen?
Eventually it came. It rained so hard that I couldn't even see in front of me. In 34℃ with 100% humidity air, like a freezer door was opened all at once. It’s unbearable? No, rather feel good.
This is the Malay Peninsula. Although there were a lot of cars, there was no sound of horns, and there were no interruption of the shameless cars. Additionally, motorcycles are free on the expressway going through a loophole at the toll gate. The cool air and orange colored scenery in the morning and evening while riding a motorcycle are wonderful. Now, why don’t you ride fantastic motorcycles in this wonderful city?

The magnificent valley of Montserrat appears before our eyes as we drive up the mountain from Barcelona, Spain. Climb up 248m in height on the steepest cable car we've ever experienced. Although we are not good at walking, we walk as if we are absorbed in the wonderful scenery. Sitting in an inn next to a monastery, gazing up at the starry sky with a glass of wine in hand and listening to the occasional toll of church bells leaves us feeling moved throughout our body. Even the paella is delicious.
Spain is quiet in the morning. Barcelona is supposed to be full of tourists, but the city we drive through on our motorcycle at 8 am is a calm and relaxed European city. The precious Gaudi can be seen from a motorcycle, at the quirky buildings or at the cheerful and free-thinking monuments that decorate the park.

Riding on ferry boat with motorcycle is always exciting and thrilling. Also, the destination is Sado Island, my heart beats even more with excitement. Like birds released from a cage, a flock of motorcycles run out of the ferry. The cars with Niigata license plates are so cool and fresh for us. If possible, I would like to see "Sado Island" license plate. Wonderful sight on north coastal road. We two passengers' excitement was constantly rising. How many times we exclaimed "Wow" when we came around a curve and the sea came into our view.
The beautiful ocean waves appeared and disappeared. Everything in this island is based on kindness. Driving manner, words people use, Expressions of Ondeko drums(鬼太鼓) and even the melody of the Sado Okesa(佐渡おけさ). The reason we can enjoy Sado deeply is because we are feeling the wind on a motorcycle.

We are going 150km south from Madrid, through Campo de Criptana. In 40 degrees temprature, weather forecast was correct, the dry hot air roasts the two Japanese motorcyclists. Our eyes got so dry that we had to close the shields on our helmets. You can clearly see that the olive trees sparsely planted on the red earth are struggling to withstand the dryness. It's a landscape that contrasts with the abundant water of Japan's rice paddy fields.
The engine of the BMW F800R runs smoothly. It's tough on the highway because there's no cowl, but the regular roads that go through the hills are comfortable, pleasant, and exhilarating. The reason we can enjoy the Spanish air with our whole bodies is because we're traveling on our beloved motorbikes.

Going in Kaohsiung on KYMCO motorcycle. It's small, but fantastic one. There are lanes designated for small motorcycles with the word “機関”, and car drivers who respect the existence of motorcycles. It is clear Taiwanese take great importance on motorcycles. Therefore, even women and the elderly people can ride the bikes safely. Also they are good at riding bikes. Even grandma can lean through curves at a light speed. A dog is sitting calmly at the feet of a pretty woman's scooter. Beautiful, well-maintained bikes.
This is Taiwan. A wonderful country where motorcycles are vibrant and have earned their citizenship. People are kind in every city. An old lady speaks Japanese and helps us find the way for us. When we wanders into a road reserved for motor cars, they forgive us with a smile. Why don't you ride a bike around this wonderful city?

Men in Islamic clothing are going on their motorcycles. Many of them are two, sometimes three deep moustache men are getting on a bike friendly. I wonder ladies don't drive bikes by themselves? Many Chinese motorcycles are here with big strong and large back step boards which will be enough for 3, 4 people riding. So cool kanji stickers put upside down. Now I try to ride. Oh, the clutch lever is half torned off. The front brake never works. The lender of the motorcycle says "It's all right rear-brake works". No back-millor, broken head-light are awful for me at night. When we get on a taxi, a bus bumped to our taxi with a large bang! Both drivers began quarreling at a loud voice.
This is Egypt, cars are driving on the right-hand side for the moment. Many people demand money every time, every place. I wish the days will come soon when I can enjoy riding a motorbike safely in this country.

Watching a red traffic light, we are waiting at the front row. The little space foremost of the cars, many motorcycles come in. There is a big electrical sign board that shows the remaining second to the next green signal. The number of the motorcycles is increasing around us. The sign shows 10 seconds before starting. Yes, I have seen the sight like this at the MOTO CROSS racing! No, a little different, many of participants here are tandem riders, three or four, no, sometimes five crews! All the riders here are gazing at the sign. 3, 2・・・and 1, finish counting down! All the motorcycles howl up and rush out. The tough for me is to dodge the passengers who are getting on and off the Jeepnies. If I shrink or hesitate going my own way, other cars and motorcycles and even walking people rush into my front.
This is Phlippine, full of motorcycle enthusiasts like us.

Hair-pin corners are the best places to be satisfied for crazy motorcyclists. The moving of the motorcycles are just like the sands falling through the narrow tube neck of sand glass. And among them, a lot of high speed bicycles are flowing down. Open head sports cars are also attend to the battle. Hey, don't come along the opposite side like that, it's not your lane. Yes, I admit I am on the wrong side. Oh, big bus, are you sure to run on these curves? Very often, at many places, an old husband and his wife on a big motorcycle are approached, ”I am jealous”, “Isn’t it tough?” and “Be careful.” Yes, riding motorcycle is enviable, hard and dangerous. Why do we have a trip on such a thing? Hot and cold and wet and dangerous because we are naked. But, every thing for the journey on motorcycle is different. The wind, the cold air, the scenery of ocean and mountains let us know we are living and they are living, what’s more strongly. The elegant smell of pine trees in Karatsu(唐津). Good winds of calcareous odour of Tengu-High Lands(天狗高原). Appetizing fragrance of citrus fruits of Yawatahama(八幡浜). Unbelievable large wind on Yobuko-Bridge(呼子大橋), and awful heavy rain on Moji-Port(門司港). Why do we have a trip on such a thing? The answer is easy. To feel the days coming after today are very precious.

My reliable motorcycle Honda's NC750 goes down on the street from a big Mosque in Istanbul. It is fantastic to hear the horn sound of the cars and loud scaring voices from somewhere. Mosqus reflecting orange color of sun light and the loud voice of prayers from big speaker insist this is just in Istanbul. The deep eye contacts with deep smiling, and their warm words for helping us, are both attractive properties. There are Asia and Europe each side of the bridge and huge numbers of cars, buses and people are crowed together. Traffic lights? One way? Never mind, they are not so large problems for us this moment. If I don't push the front edge of my bike into the front of other cars, I can't go ahead forever. And I must not worry the big booing with horns from behind.

Winding road along the sea shore. It is deep curving, wondering, sometimes devious roads without any guardrails. The sceneries from this no shield road scares me, but strange to say, my tandem rider is enjoying it a lot. Many times I feel the sands on pavement, it’s is awful to go on big, heavy motorcycle. Although on narrow road, every cars rush over 90km/h. It's easy to see the bottoms of the criff on our tilted motorcycle. A lot of pine trees, red soils, criffs, oxen and sheeps are watching at us.
This is mid summer in New Zealand in January.
When we were having a brief rest to drink water, A young man stopped his car on the road and called on us "Anything trouble?" Anyone can know why they are so kind when we breathe deeply in this wonderful nature.

Erimo cape, sung as the place “There is NOTHING”. It’s true we can’t see high trees and a lot of people. It looks calm. But we know this is only the silence between killer winters. Several men and women are picking sea cabbage in serious expression. Salt water, wind, and maybe snow scrape the sea shore. Horrible figures of eroded Cliffs. NOTHING? Yes, there is. Beautiful and at the same time awful nature is there. Everything in Hokkaido, the color of sky, smelling of soil, rusting of wave motion, are shining. The reason why we feel being near the nature is because we are going on the motorcycle.

This is the third early summer since our world began enduring COVID19. Our motorcycle was going forward at the foot of Mt.Tsurugi, on the high area of Shikoku in Japan. The things waiting for us were the beautiful panorama on the upper ends, and breathtaking three dimensional depth in the warm sun light and in the air swaying. The wind was blowing with rolling the bamboo leaves that coverd thickly the surface of the mountains, saying “Soon summer, Coming summer”. The scenaries were so wonderful that we plant ourselves down on the bench at our side for some brief. We were happy to have wind on our face, to feel coolness of the shade of trees, and also to numb fingers because of the cold rain. The reason we noticed such usual things were very special was because we were having a big journey with a motorcycle.

I Put the gear of CanAm Spider into low. Its light and active exhaust sound quickens my pulse, good acceleration feeling builds up our expectations for the big journey. I venture to say I’ve got used not to lean on my turning on this vehicle. It’s enjoyable to make a U-turn like a snow mobile. Even if I carry heavy luggages or if I stop the vehicle on downhill from the head, its reversing gear offers us an easy and perfect turning. It’s Okinawa, just removed the restrictions to prevent the occurrence of an in factious desease. Half of the restaurants and taverns are closed. Weeds left everyplace are conspicuous.
We feel the power of the people in Okinawa for waking from long expiry. The desires to get prosperity again. The sun here is briter than usual.
We wish peace, prosperity and happy laughing voice spread all over the world.

Early morning. Landing from a ferry boat at Shin-Shimonoseki(新下関). In fragile morning sun light, not so many but vivid people were on the pier. Men and women of all ages were moving on music of Radio gymnastics. Not only the nostalgic buildings and piers, but also the figure of modern bridge made us feel wonderful.
About toll for channel tunnel(Kan-monn tunnel
関門海峡トンネル) 110 yen, I felt sorry to make a long queue behind our motorcycle for our payment. The tunnel was Lovely because it was made in 1958, same as our birth.
It’s October, but still the air was hot. Leather jacket was little heavy. We felt very happy because the castle town of Hagi was filled with the sweet smell of pine trees, and the sky we looked up among the leaves was pure blue. Everything we saw and felt was fantastic because we came here by and with motorcycle.

Honda Gold wing. With the fantastic 6-cylinders engine. Each sound of them is gentle, but they make up wonderful, heavy growling harmony together when the rider curls up the throttle. So I curl again, again to enjoy the marvelous musical performance of exhaust. A lot of riders pass by each other. They make sure they are enjoying riding by waving hands. Some are large swinging like leaving port, some are little to be cool, some are feminine. Every rider unquestionably waves to the guys in the opposite lane in this paradise, Hokkaido. The sweet taste of just-boiled corn on the cob, farmers are selling at the shack on the road side, is lovely. Large soup bowl with abundant mushrooms is hot and tasty. This is Hokkaido, the very place for feeling free from everyday life. All the visitors yell for wonderful short summer. Won’t you enjoy riding motorcycles before its long tough winter?

A Harley-Road King was going through the gaunt mountains. There were no trees or plants on the mountains in UAE. If we had not been under the clear sky and on the paved road, we would have mistaken this place for some other planet. For us Japanese, used to know the mountains with the trees grow thick, the view was different. We felt uneasy “if our vehicle breaks down here”even on the vehicle with a big engine. No rivers, no street drains. Everything was deeply concerned with lack of rain. We found manyJapanese cars on all the roads. Of course some cars from different countries were there. But the men, wearing a dazzling white KANDOORA with assured manners, definitely drove big Japanese 4 wheel drive cars. The most reliable thing here is“Not to be breakdown” i.e. Japanese products.

2020 Harley Davidson Crossbones

Harley Davidson Crossbones has become a member of our family. The bare FRONT SUSPENSION that expand and contract before my very eyes, HEAD LIGHT like the figure of funny dinosaur, SADDLE SEAT, yes I have seen that for military motorcycles in the war film, FAT TIRES with its proud thickness and with hard turning. Of course I need to wear a strident helmet and a vintage jacket to appear on the screen. When I push the starter of the engine, Mufflers that Vance and Hines made with all their heart make beautiful sounds with full self-assertion. To loosen bolts, inch-sized tools are needed, although almost Japanese repair shops don't have. Rather than that, I want to ask you one question. "Have you ridden such an enjoyable and pleasurable vehicle with internal combustion engine?"

Kyushu has never betrayed our expectations. GunKan-Jima(軍艦島), the huge ruined town on a little island , was reflecting figures of a lot of lives. Soon the wonderful views of ocean and hills, relic of Hara-castle(原城跡). It was enough for us to feel the depth of history. Every places we went through on our motorcycle were waiting the hustle and bustle. We were able to feel not only the endurance and the efforts but also warm heart of the people in Kyusyu who believes to have prosperity soon. No matter how seriously Covid reduce us to despair, people in this country act as if it is quite easy. Motorcycle always brings us the new wind and feeling of the warm heart.

When we looked on this fertile rice fields, which spread out every direction from us, we couldn't help feeling a huge amount of efforts, dreams, and hopes of our predecessors. Soon we strayed into Shirakami-Sanchi (白神山地). Though we had had enough experiences to ride at such places, we felt frightened. No signal bar on my mobile phone and unpaved and no-guardrail road. It was tough to ride in tandem on 400kg heavy motorcycle. Whooo, at last we got here Osore-Zan(恐山) . Volcanic smoke was there in the yard of the temple, surprisingly! Leaving from Prague, soon we jumped into the scenery of spreading plowed field. Although in middle summer, they were colored at brown, those of autumn. Bumpy roads on constructions. But somehow the few power shovels. And not so many workers. Brown colored maybe rusty steels. Long long construction site, where I follow the car in front anyway. But they aren’t serious matters.
Look at the motorcycle riders showing a friendly sign from the opposite lane. They are sure to enjoy their short summer. Look at the scooter riders waving to us even from the opposite lane on the high way. Look at the truck drivers keeping the distance behind from my motorcycle. Look at the priest riding cheerfully on the old BMW motorcycle. Look at the smiling tandem couple maybe over 70 years old. Look at the old people enjoying riding bicycles assisted by electricity. All here are enjoying their life. We were given courages when going on motorcycle in this country.

The time was just the beginning of REIWA ERA, the whole nation was shouting for joy. The Honda's VTX1800 was running with vintage husband and wife in TSUNOSHIMA island. The calm view from the shore was extremely quiet and touching, and a noble bridge built in a straight line between the island and the mainland showed a symbol of Japanese latent power. The sun rising from the horizon indicated the existence of something noble intensely. Smells of the each places, cold winds from the shades of the trees, and the flavors of the ocean, everything we feel on motorcycle were nice gifts from nature.

Niken.
Should I explain what the difference is between this one and an ordinary motorcycle? Or is somebody insisting that I amended the picture or did mischief with Photo-shop? Or laughing it down saying“there is no such thing”? It’s incredible shape surprises or frightens us much, and I can feel the gaze of all other riders upon me and this near-futuristic motorcycle when we pass each other. Please have a look. The face of it is just like a robot which wouldn’t be out of place in a battle field of a Transformers film. And please count the number of the wheels. Yes, three. But this is not an ordinary tricycle that I have experienced, it leans! What is more, the two front wheels slide parallel and the feeling is quite steady and stable even at a steep curve. The large ground contact area and wide stance of front wheels makes for an indeterminate wonderful feeling.

A lot of motorcycle riders who sing the praises of the summer in Switzerland on the Furka, the Grimsel, the Susten Pass. Where do such a lot of motorcycles come from? An amazing number of vintage couples are running parallel and enjoying tandem riding. I tingle with excitement when I hear various exhaust sounds of motorcycles in the early morning. When I realized it, I grabbed my helmet and rushed to the motorcycle.

Desert. Dazzling white light from burnt sands in daytime, mysterious vermilion light from the sands in twilight, and horrifying darkness of night sands. We're nervous about proceeding even on a paved highway, because it's surrounded by desert. Camels in the distance declare this is the middle of the Arabian Peninsula. Dried air makes the voice from my back seat Husky. People in the UNITED ARAB EMIRATES, who know the meaning of 50 degrees temprature, won't choose motorcycles as a mode of transportation. However, they're kind enough to smile and wave at us. Undoubtedly we wave back them. Small children accost us in Arabic. Young men come to take pictures with us and our motorcycle.

Dense morning fog in Abu Dhabi. Fascinating Mosques in shrouded white mist insist that violent sun light isn't Abu Dhabi's only characteristic. The Harley's offensive roar sounds off in early morning echo throughout the beautiful towns of this Islam state. Suddenly. The front wheels spread out on both sides are making it look like a Formula 1 machine. And more, it can reverse. While we were parking using reverse, everybody around us were all smiles. A lot of bikes are running around in Shang-Hai. But they never make exhaust noises because they are electric. All the bikes, not only for men going out to work but also for housewives on shopping are electric. Even the bikes pulling big trailers are electric. It doesn't matter if the bike is old or new. Even rickshaws are electric here. I felt that this new species of bike must eat and occupied the roles of the old ones.
The bikes with an internal-combustion engine look brave, they're noisy, are classical and sometimes rather comical. Vehicles with a roaring engine may disappear soon. I am sure a lot of people felt sad when electric trains replaced steam locomotives, just like me now.

Winding road in Akiyoshi-dai Karst plateau, a mountain path to Nageire-Dou in Sanbutsu-ji Temple, new pavement of San-In High Way. Now is a good time to ride on all the roads in Japan for they welcome big motorcycles. I want to keep riding, feeling the wind, chasing the sun light. With a motorcycle.

B+com, A wireless Bluetooth communication device. Speakers and a microphone inside the helmet make it bi-directional communication possible. Between tandem riders and other riders on different bikes. Clear digital sound and automatic volume levels according to the noise of our surroundings. An hour of charging makes it possible to use all day long. channels are used for telephone, and music and speaking. Of course it is possible to listen the voice of a GPS navigation at the same time. We are old enough to know the amateur radio transceiver, we are nostalgic for using a PTT switch every time we speak. This is a useful device to share the light, wind, and time with a motorcycle.

The Sony Action Cam. A very small video camera like a matchbox, it can record the point of view of the rider. Using Japanese made high image processing apparatus, the quality of the picture is incredible even at night or in tunnel or full of vibrating conditions. The monitor armstrap also works as on/off switch for recording, I must say it has very high operability. The brave figures of high mountains of Alps, the views along the Danube with a flood of light, heavy rainfall on Romantic Road. This instrument recorded these heart-pounding, exciting and thrilling feelings. I am looking forward to seeing the movies on the big screen with friends with good wines in hand, when I become too old to get on a motorcycle.

 The Harley Davidson Ultra Classic.
To say nothing about the acoustic system and auto-cruise device, the seats and trunks are high quality and make us happy with unbounded pleasure to have a long journey on a motorcycle. It never
highlights the power capability or its ability of accelerating, but makes known the pleasure of its cornering ability that is characteristic of a two-wheeler, dynamically, but stably.
I must say motorcycle is one of the best things to share the taste of life, time, and experiences.

  2015 Kyoto, Hokuriku (Japan)

Its big torque from a low rotational frequency gives a sense of unlimited reliability, and even when tandem riding with full baggage, it is stable and easy for the rider to make a U-turn with only using the rear brake and accelerator. Before telling its horse power or fuel consumption or mechanisms, we can understand that motorcycles are exciting vehicles, and can realize how they made the unstable two-wheeler into a steady machine in a long history. A Harley is an extremely attractive motorcycle, made in America.

The dancing of cherry blossoms was in full swing  on the mountain roads of Kami-Yahagi(上矢作) and Ena Village(恵那). The birds, waited and waited for spring, were playing with the spray of the Nodo-no-Taki falls(喉の滝). The flower petals beside Agigawa-ko lake(阿木川湖), dancing at blowing wind, were announcing the spring party would close soon, so visitors there had sorrow at parting from there. Every tree on the mountains sprouted, the winter which had silenced the surroundings until recently was not there. The moment when we felt extremely pleased was when we exchange greetings among other motorcycle riders as we passed each other.

The narrow road to Choshi-no-Taki Falls (奥飛騨・銚子の滝) was covered with beautiful yellow and red maple leaves. The leaves falling like snow with the sound of water were welcoming us, the lucky visitors. All the creatures in mou
ntains were moving to prepare for the coming winter, and even the sounds of leaves rubbing against each other were just saying “Winter! Winter !”. The exhaust sound of our V-twin engine was just like the heart tones of some living organisms.

The Harley Davidson Softail. The satisfying rotational torque of a 1600cc air-cooled two cylinders engine was perfect as usual, powerful from low to high speeds. If we describe the engine sound of a 4 or 6 cylinders jet plane, the sound of this Harley is exactly that of helicopter. It was a greatly satisfying to open the throttle at high gear on the suburban road, the Harley pushed us forward with loud roar.
It was easy to understand why there are a lot of Harley fans all over the world.

   The Honda VTX-1800.
A 1800cc engine with two cylinders is quite enjoyable when we feel its strong beat. Its long wheel base makes it very straight, the feeling of controling this vehicle is easy and free with the wide steering bar. This big guy is good at tandem driving with big luggage, and is highly balanced to keep driving for a long distance. It is a monster-sized motorcycle which lets the driver want to keep riding even after a whole day of riding.

 Harley Davidson Road King.
If you would have experienced the full impact of the sound of its engine sound, its soft seat, and fat torque, you wouldn't complain about its mechanically wired dull clutch, or perplexing neutral gear position. A lot of things of this Harley Davidson troubled us a lot. But after a long ride without any stopping through large continental roads, we would still say "Well, let it go".
It feels rough when we go and stop at the traffic lights from the extending and contracting of the suspention spring. But dramatically it changes to a first-class sofa on the high way. Then we can understand the insistence of engineers of Harley. And we accept the reason why many Harley fans are there all over the world.

The mysterious fellows on the motorcycles.
They are males in yellow shirts with mysterious smiles. Their group name is "The Exhausted Riders".
They usually are kind and calm vintage men. But change their expressions suddenly when they put their helmets and leather gloves on. They ride on their motorcycles. Sometimes on burning asphalts. Sometimes with ice on their jackets. They ride on ther favorite motorcycles.
The liquid monsters waiting for the riders are “Shockers”, highly alcoholic concentration. Shockers try to put down the Exhausted Riders hard. But the Exhausted Riders never fail. They drink up all of the Shockers, with a loud laugh and smacking their lips.

Noto Peninsula, about 20 years have passed since I was last here. The width of Chiri-hama became small, but the beauty itself was just the same as then. Amazing, fine and smooth highway took us to Wajima and Suzu. The nice garden in Kanazawa and Sen-maida,  Wagura Onsen were fit with the feeling of modern Japanese refirement. All places were busy for preparing for winter which was coming soon. To have a trip by motorcycle is to connect with these wonderful moments.

The Yamaha Drag-Star 400. It has a good seat hight and easiness for pushing and pulling even for the ladies. This Yamaha is a groovy motorcycle. With a good exhaust sound of a 2 cylinder engine changes usual pavement to the scenes of a Romantic movie, and the nice figure which is typical of Yamaha's gives riders the full satisfaction. The riders don’t  want to stop the engine even after a long day touring. Good taste, and wonderful quality, superb partner for the rider, we must say.

Good vibrations but smooth, a wild pulsation engine but still runs gently. Nice handling without quirky movement was the proof that the machine was made in Japan. Step boards which offer two crew a large amount of flexibility and comfort on long journeys along the Castle Strasse in Germany.Pannier cases which are easy to open and lock, Large saddles and backrest. Above all, the beauty of its form are neat and clean-cut. This is a masterpiece that many want to have.

This is the F6B. Honda’s Gold Wing transformed into a lighter and stylish machine. Only Taking off the top case and short-sized cowling made for such a lovely motorcycle. It has 1800cc, a monster 6-cylinders engine, but the low center of gravity and firm frame work of the F6b let the rider run through the mountain pass at our will quite easily. This super machine was redesigned not only by changing the cowling and top-case but also its seat, shape-upped styling matches the style of “A bit bad dad”.

This is the Harley Davidson FLH-R Road King, the flag ship of Harley. A 1700cc two cylinder engine lets a rider know each explosion definitively and its exhaust sound when I closed the throttle valve is much more attractive than opening it. We feel as if we are riding on the back of a living thing. It seems to be rather impolite to express this flagship as a “machine” or “instrument”. But we can be aware of the earnestness of Harley’s engineers and its deep history from riding it.

Its overwhelmingly large body, and shape. Especially the view through the wide and high wind screen feels the same as a 4 wheels car. But the preoccupation that everybody has that it is “hard to ride and heavy” disappears fast. And riders will give the Japanese engineers a cheer and applause because this Gold Wing is marvelous and superb. Wonderfully powerful, smooth, torquing full engine, a low center of gravity, a reversing system with starter motor. Every characteristic of this big motorcycle should be admired all over the world. I want to have a long long trip on this perfect touring machine with my wife some day.

It was fantastic to ride around mountain districts in south France on this cute two wheelers. A dry and dapper sound from an Italian 2 cylinder engine echoed all along the roadway between the prestigious towns. We never got tired on the winding road that doesn’t have any traffic lights. This tomboy comes in brilliant Italian red. The ride was little rough and harsh for me, who was old enough and used to the smooth and modest Japanese machines.

It has a good windshield for comfortable cruising of long distances. As it is electrically powered and continuously adjustable, the rider has little negative affect from riding in the rain. Its 1300cc V4 engine gives off a lot of heat, that would be nice for the cold weather in Europe. This motorcycle was powerful enough to offer tandem riders very comfortable long distance touring. In Japan, tandem riding on the high ways was allowed after April 2005, so this motorcycle became the very machine for enjoying couple touring. And communication equipment using Bluetooth to talk not only to tandem riders but also to separate groups of riders while enjoying music. It is a great epoch for riders in history.

Have a look the glamorous styling. Water cooled V-four 1200cc engine that holds 140 hp made for fat and fierce exhaust sounds. The beautiful figure of it fascinated me at the garage, and was enough of a plus for me to overcome the wobbly feeling on high ways. The reliability of the shaft drive which made readjustment unnecessary charmed me, the lazy rider. This was the wonderful and lovely monster machine which I had a lot of journeys with for about 15 years.

When my wife was young enough to ride it herself she was satisfied with it's single cylinder exhaust sound very much. Since it doesn't have a starter motor, she had to kick start it every time. Its characteristical light exhaust sound always heads turns when it passes, even now. We rode our motorcycles while operating the PTT switch of an amateur radio transceiver, and we could comfort ourselves from the winter cold wind or rain by the warmth of our partner's voices in our helmet. The spork wheel of it reminds one of the history of vintage motorcycles, elegant and gentle lines.

 Honda CBX750.
I had underestimated it would be impossible to keep riding on motorcycles after becoming a member of society. But it was a nice mistake. The CBX750's style was nice, with a refined small wind shield. It was a machine with which I came to know the enjoyment of riding motorcycle while using an amateur radio transceiver. I wore leather overalls, riding around was a exceedingly happy time. That time was overflowing with motorcycle riders in Japan, men and women of all ages in their own rider jackets, came and went here and there. It was nice time for all Japanese motorcycle riders, particularly for me and my wife.

I thought it would be only while I was a student that I could ride motorcycles freewheelingly. So I myself and my good friend worked hard as private tutors and got the same motorcycles, the CB750K. A picture of the DOHC(Double Overhead Cam Shaft) 4 cylinders engine with 4 mufflers makes me excited even now. We arranged a rendezvous at 3 o'clock in the morning, rode in cold air on intermittent high ways to Nikko or even to Akiyoshidai in Yamaguchi-prefecture in those days. We young students didn't mind rain or cold, we enjoyed having journies by motorcycles. I am sure it was the time that I began to say "Thank you" to my motorcycle after a big tour, while stroking its fuel tank. It had a good figured air-cooled engine, and my late mother used to willingly get on it.

When my wife was a university student, to make her field of activities wider, she invested in a new motorcycle. In manual cluch control, it ran cutely. Like a child's plaything picked from a toy box, the shape of the handling bar and seat were unique like an American motorcycle's. It insisted to be run at 30km/h which was wonderful for enjoying scenery.

 Honda HawkⅡ 400.
It was the first motorcycle that had over 40 hp for me after I graduated high school. I can't forget the impact of the power of the 400cc engine that was offered when I opened the throttle. Spoked wheels were ordinary for the motorcycles of those days, so the pentagon iron wheels of this HawkⅡ were fresh for me. Kettle-shaped fuel tanque and its wet exhaust sound were little funny. Influenced by some cartoon, motorcycle gangs, love to ride tandem even now, I feel quite happy because this motorcycle had a high durability.

I was a 2nd year student of high school. Fortunately, I was allowed to ride this new motorcycle by my parents. The traffic was not so heavy compared to today's, but it was certain that motorcycles were dangerous vehicles. With only the words "Don't increase your speed", my father trusted his son. I dare say the CB125's 2-cylinder 4-cycle engine doesn't have a lot of power, but this motorcycle was a great instrument for me to enjoy the views. It was just the  beginning of my wonderful life with motorcycles.
